Southern Tanzania Safaris is vast and wild and has two large parks: Selous Game Reserve and Ruaha National Park. It has two smaller parks as well, the Udzungwa Mountains and Mikumi National Park, but all of these parks receive a fraction of the visitors that their counterparts in the north do and offer untouched wilderness and an exciting safari experience
Day 1: Arrive in Dar Es Salaam and transfer to hotel
Pick up on arrival and transfer to hotel and Overnight at the CBD Hotel
Day 2: Drive from Dar Es Salaam – Selous Game Reserve
Pick up 08:00 am at the airport, and drive to the Selous (4-5 hrs).
You will take part in an afternoon boat safari along the mighty Rufiji River. Where you can see plenty of hippos, crocodiles and bird life. Overnight at the Nyerere Tented Camp All meals included.
Day 3: Selous Game Reserve
You will participate in walking safaris, game drives private in Selous Game Reserve and boating safaris, Africa’s largest wildlife sanctuary, with an area of 54.600kms – bigger than Denmark and 4 times the size of Serengeti!.
Selous has the world’s largest number of large game animals – elephant, buffalo, and rhino. It also contains wildebeest, eland, giraffe, waterbuck, zebra, impala, hippo, leopard and lion, not to mention over 350 species of birds. Dinner and overnight at the Nyerere Tented Camp. All meals included.
Day 4: Selous Game Reserve
Early morning foot safari looking for close encounters with visiting near village return to the camp for breakfast, after breakfast set off by 4×4 on game drive across the Selous Game Reserve with picnic lunch then dinner and overnight at Sable Mountain Lodge. All meals included.
Day 5: Drive from Selous Game Reserve – Mikumi National Park (5-6 hours)
In the morning you will depart to Mikumi National Park while crossing through Northern Selous. Depends arrival time – afternoon game drive. Overnight in Stanley’s Kopje Camp
Day 6: Full day in Mikumi National Park
Full day of game drives in Mikumi National Park Overnight in Stanley’s Kopje Camp
Whilst on safari, you can see a rich variety of bird species, as well as large numbers of giraffe, buffalo and elephants. If you are lucky you may also be able to spot lions, leopards and African wild dogs. Likely to be seen animals include zebras, hippos, hartebeest, wildebeest, impala, warthog, eland and antelope
Day 7: Drive to Ruaha National Park (5-6 hours)
After breakfast, depart for Ruaha National Park, having lunch en-route.
By afternoon you will have reached the Tandala Tented Camp. There are many types of different birds, wild flowers, butterflies and trees that can be seen nearby.Dinner and overnight at Ruaha River Lodge. All meals included.
Day 8,9: Ruaha National Park
Three full days of game driving at Ruaha National Park, with picnic lunches. Ruaha has an area of 10,300 sq km, and is the second largest park, and second largest elephant sanctuary in Tanzania. The great Ruaha River that flows along its entire eastern border creates spectacular gorges and scenery, and features a large number of hippos and crocodiles. The wide variety of animals that inhabit the park include both Greater and Lesser Kudu, roan and sable antelope. Bird life is also rich, with over 370 species recorded. Dinner and overnight Ruaha River Lodge. All meals included.
Day 10: Drive to Udzungwa Mountains National Park (5-6 hours) – after breakfast another game drive in Mikumi National Park then later transfer to Hondo Hondo Tented Camp, lunch on the way (provided by the camp from Mikumi). Afternoon walking tour around Mang’ula village and get a feeling of a typical Tanzanian day to day life. Back at camp before dinner, enjoy watching the baboons from the spectacular bar while having a sundowner. Dinner and overnight at Udzungwa Forest Camp (Hondo Hondo).
Day 11: Hiking in Udzungwa – Sanje Waterfalls – after breakfast, drive to the park gate and start hiking into the superb primary forest to the base and then the top of the spectacular 180m Sanje Waterfall looking for primates on the way (Iringa Red Colobus and Sanje Mangabey). Swim in plunge pools, see endemic African Violets growing in the spray zones and have lunch in the forest on the top of the falls. Descend after enjoying superb views.
Drive back to the camp in the late evening for your hot dinner and spend the night at Udzungwa Forest Camp (Hondo Hondo). Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included.
Day 12: Transfer to Dar Es Salaam
End of your southern circuit safari, departure to Dar Es Salaam by vehicle for onward travel. Breakfast and lunch box provided.
